The process of ascertaining whether someone or something is who or what they claim to be is known as authentication. Authentication is typically done using login passwords in both private and public computer networks (including the Internet).

Authentication is the first stage, which verifies that a user is who he or she claims to be. The authorization stage is the second stage, which grants the user access to various resources based on their identity.
