Color Theory – Types and Basics (Simple Explanation)

Color theory is the science and art of using colors effectively in design. It helps create visually pleasing and meaningful color combinations.

Here are the main types or concepts in color theory :

 1. Primary Colors

  • Red, Blue, Yellow

  • These are the base colors that can’t be made by mixing other colors.

2. Secondary Colors

  • Green, Orange, Purple

  • Made by mixing two primary colors:

    • Red + Yellow = Orange

    • Blue + Yellow = Green

    • Red + Blue = Purple

3. Tertiary Colors

  • Made by mixing a primary color with a nearby secondary color.

  • Examples: Red-Orange, Blue-Green, Yellow-Orange, etc.

4. Color Wheel

  • A circular chart showing color relationships.

  • Helps designers choose harmonious color schemes.

5. Color Schemes

Common ways to combine colors for visual harmony:

Monochromatic

Different shades, tints, and tones of one color.

Light blue + dark blue + white.

Analogous

Colors next to each other on the wheel.

Blue, Blue-Green, Green.

Complementary

Opposite colors on the wheel (high contrast).

Blue & Orange, Red & Green.

Triadic

Three colors forming a triangle on the wheel.

Red, Yellow, Blue.

Split-Complementary

One base color + two adjacent to its complement.

Safer than complementary, less contrast.

6. Warm vs. Cool Colors

  • Warm Colors: Reds, oranges, yellows – feel energetic and inviting.

  • Cool Colors: Blues, greens, purples – feel calm and soothing.

7. Neutrals

  • Black, white, gray, brown, beige.

  • Used as background or to balance bold colors.
